Jan Vermeer (1632 - 1675)
Introduction and Brief Biography

detail from Girl with a Pearl EarringJan Vermeer is today recognised as one of the greatest Dutch painters. He painted mostly tranquil domestic scenes of an everyday nature, and nearly all of them are marked with the characteristic play of light falling from a window. His "View of Delft" is the only landscape that survives, apart from the smaller homely "Little Street". He was largely forgotten by the art world after his death, and only "rediscovered" in 1866 by a French critic. In 1653 he was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke of Delft as a master painter. He served four terms on its board of governors and appears to be well known among detail from The Water Jughis contemporaries and other artists of his day, making a modest living as an art dealer. Unfortunately the war between France and The Netherlands in 1672 affected the family fortunes, and he died from ill-health apparently as a result of his depression over his debts and inability to provide for his family.

Only 36 paintings survive today as recognised Vermeer originals.
