Aelbert
Cuyp is the most famous member of a Dutch family of painters and one of the most
celebrated of all landscape painters. He was born in Dordrecht and lived there
his whole life. During the 1630s he trained with his father, Jacob Gerritz Cuyp,
a successful portrait painter. Father and son collaborated in the early 1640s,
with Jacob painting the portraits and Aelbert the landscapes.
A
hallmark in most of Cuyp's paintings is a large expanse of sky bathed in the golden
light of approaching sunset, or sunrise, in scenes of tranquil serenity. His finest
works - typically river scenes and landscapes with placid, dignified-looking cows
- show a masterly handling of glowing light.
Cuyp
was very successful and respected as a painter in his own lifetime, but painted
very little in the last years of his life - possibly because of his marriage in
1658 to a wealthy widow, and his increased involvement in religious and civic
activities. When he died in November 1691 Cuyp was one of the richest men in Dordrecht.
The National Gallery London will be holding
an Exhibition of some of Cuyp's works, February to May 2002. Click
